Increased Throughput with Integrex @ Curt G. Joa |
|
by Steve Nehls For nearly seventy years, Curt G. Joa has been a leader in the manufacture, design and build of Custom Web Processed Equipment. From its humble beginnings, the Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin facility has grown to over 230,000 square feet with a total employment of 350 people. As it is with all manufacturers, Curt G. Joa is always looking to
increase the quality of their product, reduce their lead times, and maintain or reduce
their manufacturing costs. This is something that always sounds good to say, however it is
not as easy to accomplish. A couple of years ago Ken Moehring, Les Simmelink and a
manufacturing team saw an opportunity to help Curt G. Joa make an impact on reducing their
manufacturing costs while improving lead times and product quality. They recognized a
method that could possibly change the way that they machined many of their components.
After a visit to an existing Mazak Integrex user, the Curt G. Joa team purchased a Mazak
Integrex 30Y. This successful installation was followed shortly by the purchase of an Integrex 300Y. The results have been very positive. |

The Integrexes have become a major focal point in the 70,000 square foot machining area. "Previously we always experienced a big bottle neck in our vertical machining centers. Since the Integrexes came on line that is no longer the case." As an example, Ken highlights a part that previously required 31 hours to manufacture with six different operations. This same part can now be done in one half the time. The overall throughput time of the part has been dramatically improved in that the part now flows through only one work center. Les also points out that the Integrex provides for better part accuracy because the part does not have to go through multiple work holdings, inspections, etc. In addition, if there is a feature or accuracy problem, it can be addressed right away- not after it has reached process number six. Flexibility is another benefit of the Integrex. With the 40-position toolchanger, Curt G. Joa is able to leave resident tools set up in the machine, giving them the ability to changeover quickly from job to job. This is very important, as a normal week has 30-35 different jobs that will be scheduled through each of the Integrexes. "We are able to do a set-up in 10 to 15 minutes on the machines," says Les. This is critical due to the small lot sizes that are run through the machines. Les also points out that 98% of the programming is done right at the machine in Mazatrol. "Even on many of the more complex jobs, it is easy for us to program the job in Mazatrol and be running before we could even get the program written off line. This is also a huge benefit in the throughput of their product. Curt G. Joa is a great example of a company that has been able to implement Multi-tasking to its full potential. MSI is proud of the Curt G. Joa success and look forward to continuing to play a role in their future machining successes. |
