During these difficult times I’m always interested in a success story, particularly when it comes from a job shop. Horizon Systems of Kenosha, WI peaked my interest.  In November they moved from Gurnee, IL into a brand new facility they had built, doubling the size of their plant.   I don’t know of many job shops building and expanding their facilities in these difficult times.

At the same time, I had been asking our salesman, Mike Bielfeldt, who for many years has been responsible for Horizon, why Dan Kegg, the owner, had not seriously considered more Multi-tasking machines.  Dan currently has 10 Mazaks, just one of them a Multi-tasking Super Quick Turn.  Mike kept telling me that you have to see Dan’s shop to understand. I did just that.

What I found was a very good machine shop supplemented by a super sub-assembly operation.  Horizon Systems assembles all kinds of products, ink jet printers, metalforming machines, pharmaceutical machines, etc. These sub-assemblies are small quantity, but very high quality. When I looked through the plant, I saw an extremely neat plant.  There is no junk accumulation, everything has a place and a reason to be there. One of the things that jumped out at me was the shipping area. Now shipping is shipping.  Generally if the customer gets the parts undamaged, they are happy.   But, every part that leaves Horizon looks like a special present — or in Dan’s words "a Christmas present."

Every box is securely taped and well marked with the customer’s documentation, and all labels are placed in exactly the same spot on every box.  Dan explained to me, "We’re a job shop, but we do what everyone else doesn’t want to."  In the "who we are" section of the Horizon brochure it says "we strive to develop a working relationship with each customer to insure we meet their requirements and needs. "Because Dan’s vision is to be different and better, this special care in shipping is an illustration of how deep that philosophy is embraced at Horizon.  They machine all kinds of material but specialize in the tough stuff like titanium, Hastalloy and the exotic stainless steels.

Dan sums up the essence of Horizon Systems: "I would rather make one piece for $1,000 than a 1,000 pieces for $1.00."  Dan is focused on machining world class parts and then taking it to the next level by adding significant customer value.  By assembling these machined parts for his customers he has positioned Horizon Systems to differentiate themselves to not only survive, but grow in these difficult times. !multiball.gif (4131 bytes)
