Scanning Improves Tooling Acquisition Process |

![]() "The scanning system works great. Our tooling inventory is scanned on a weekly basis. This assures that we will always have enough tooling on hand. The time saved in monitoring the ordering of needed tooling, along with the simplified ordering system allows me to focus on production, and that’s what contributes to our bottom line," explains Michael Heise (pictured below, black shirt) - Manufacturing Engineer, Carlson Tool.

Schmidt (pictured in blue shirt) Senior Process Specialist MT&S - Brookfield, WI Seventeen miles north of Milwaukee, in the city of Cedarburg, Carlson Tool & Manufacturing has been serving the industrial community by drilling holes that only a handful of companies in the country are capable of producing. Since 1964 Carlson Tool & Manufacturing has specialized in making holes from .062 to 10-1/2 inches in diameter up to 17 feet in depth. Operating from their 37,000 square foot facility, Carlson Tool has focused on their unprecedented commitment to quality, backed by over 125 years of experience provided from their core team of drilling experts, to make them truly "The Deep Hole Boring Specialists." Their ISO9001 commitment assures that Carlson Tool’s customers have their work done on time and it’s done right the first time. Their first class staff assures door to door service, and a computer driven schedule that insures an accurate response to their customer’s requirements. A critical component of Carlson Tool's success in meeting their customer’s delivery requirements is having the right tool at the right time. Carlson’s key production personnel worked with me to develop a tool inventory scanning system that assured that Carlson would not encounter "stock out" challenges on critical cutting tools. Competitive manufacturing cannot operate without a reliable supply chain that insures the ability to meet their customer’s demands. Tom Huiras, Lead Person, Carlson Tool & Mfg. Corp explains, "the deep hole drilling business requires a fast turnaround of customers work. We cannot afford to wait for tooling. With the scanning system, I don’t have to worry about tooling. This allows me to work on meeting our customer’s requirements." Carlson currently has four points-of-use tooling areas with in their facility. Keeping the tooling close to their work stations saves valuable time. Making sure those tooling areas remain stocked can make or break a scheduled delivery or have a major effect on the jobs profitability. I helped Carlson identify, bar code label and set up an inventory data base which addresses the minimum stock and reorder quantities for each tool. On a scheduled basis, I check and scan any item that has met the minimum quantity criteria for reorder. A recommended "Buy Report" is produced and presented to the appropriate department heads of each work station supported by the inventory. The department heads have the final approval on which of the scanned items will be ordered. A detailed price, by item, is included in this report allowing the department heads the flexibility to control their tooling budgets. |
