How does God show His love
for us? Paul states the answer very clearly in his letter to the Romans, “God
showed His love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.”
Jesus is the revelation of God’s love! Again we read, “for God so loved the
world that He gave His only Son, and whoever believes in Jesus has eternal
life.” While sin has separated us from God, Jesus Christ has brought us back to
God through His death and resurrection. Even Jesus said that no greater love
does one show than to lay down his life for his friend. That is exactly what
Jesus did. He laid down His life for you and me! Has anyone shown you more
love than this? Jesus gave His life that we may live now and forever.
We can draw some more
insight into God’s nature of love, by looking at the great love chapter in the
Bible-I Corinthians 13. In this chapter Paul describes some characteristics of
love, which I believe we can use to understand God better. Paul says that love
is patient. We read many times in the Bible that God is patient in dealing with
His people when they are doing wrong. God gently corrects and reproves His
people back to obedience. Love is kind. We see God’s kindness in His daily
provision of our needs. The Bible says that every good thing comes from God
above. We need to give thanks to God for all the blessings in our lives.
One last observation about God’s love is that
He has given us freedom to choose. God in His love did not create robots that
would automatically obey Him. He desires that we obey Him because we want to.
What parent doesn’t swell up in pride when their child obeys on their own, not
having to be told what to do? I believe God is the same. He delights in us
when we obey Him on our own, but He has given us a choice, whether we will
follow Him or forsake Him. That is God showing love toward us. May we see the
love of God more clearly in our lives.
