I was listening to a radio program on the way home one
night and the speaker was making a point on the holiness of God.
I admit that
when driving and listening to the radio I don’t always catch what is being said,
but the words Holiness of God rang in my ears. My first thought was “what is the
definition of the word”. According to American Heritage Dictionary, “Holiness”
means sacred, worthy of worship, or set apart. In my mind when I hear the word
Holiness, I quickly associate it with God, who is righteous, pure, perfect, and
just. Now most of us would not argue that God carries these attributes, but like
me we would have to admit we think more about God being loving, kind, full of
grace and mercy, forgiving us of our sins. We need to understand that God’s
righteousness, purity, and justice demands punishment for the things we do
wrong!
The question we need to ask ourselves is ,“ who is going to be punished for our
sins”?
We can take this punishment upon ourselves, as we stand
before God and He executes our sentence of eternal death (Revelation 20:11-15).
Or we can accept God’s offer to transfer the penalty and punishment over to the
living Son of God-Jesus- Who willingly took our place as God passes judgment on
Him for our sins. (Romans 6:23; Romans 5:8) For me the answer is easy, I want
Jesus to take my place. I don’t treasurer the thoughts of facing a Holy God by
myself. I take comfort in the fact that Jesus promises to be my advocate before
the Father. (I Timothy 2:5).
So you may be asking why I’m so sure that Jesus is my Advocate, or how
do you know for sure you are saved? Can anyone know for sure?
The Apostle John
wrote in his first letter, “these things I have written that you may know you
have eternal life.” (I John 5:13) What are these things you say!
The verses
before this say, “and this is the record that God has given us eternal life, and
this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life, he who has not the Son of
God has not life.” Some 30 years ago, by faith through prayer I asked Jesus to
forgive my sins as I confessed that He is God. That He lived a perfect life on
earth, suffered and died on the cross taking the punishment for my sins, and
rose from the dead on the third day (this is the gospel-good news).
I then asked
Him to come into my life as I repented of my sin and He did. So as the verse
says, “he who has the Son of God has life! I have the Son! Do you?
Do you know
for sure?
How can sinful man gaze upon a Holy God in heaven?
Except
for the fact that the Lamb of God (Jesus) has taken away the sin of the world, I
don’t believe we can!
May God give us eyes to see, ears to hear, and faith to
believe in the One that is True; Jesus Christ His Son. |
