In John 14:1-6 Jesus says: Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God;
trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many
rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I
am going there to prepare a place for you. And
if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me
that you also may be where I am. You know the
way to the place where I am going.
Thomas said to Jesus, "Lord we don’t know where you are going, so how can we
know the way?"
Jesus answered, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the
Father except through me."
As we discussed these words in our lunch Bible study group, we became aware
of two main themes in this passage that are used quite often. The first theme is
that Jesus promises to go and prepare a place for us in Heaven and will come
back for us. I have been to many funeral
services where these words of comfort, hope and assurance that our loved ones
are in Heaven are spoken. Jesus has guaranteed
to us that our hearts do not have to be worried or troubled for His Father’s
house has room for us and He is in charge of the preparations.
He has promised to us that He will come back for
us, so that we may be with Him. So now let us
trust in Him.
The second theme is a passage that Christians often refer to when claiming
that Jesus is the only way to God the Father and Heaven. Jesus
says, I am the way, truth and life, no one comes to the Father, but through Me.
In other passages in the Bible the writers under
the direction of God’s Spirit proclaim this same theme:
- Peter says this in the first Gospel sermon in Acts 4:12.
Peter says
concerning Jesus, "There is salvation in no one else! For there is no other
name in all of heaven for people to call on to save them."
- The Apostle John writes in his first letter these words.
And this is what
God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
So whoever has God’s Son has life; whoever does not have His Son does not have
life. (I john 5:11-12)
- The Apostle Paul states this theme also, " For the wages of sin is death,
but the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
(Romans 6:23)
To summarize this truth and the truth of the Gospel the Apostle Paul writes.
We are made right in God’s sight when we trust in Jesus Christ to take away our
sins. This offer is for everyone, no matter who
they are or what they have done. (Romans 3:22) May God bless you in your journey toward eternal life. |
